I’ve got Moody, Brigman, and Smith family buried here, and probably others I’ve yet to discover. There are graves in Mizpah Cemetery dating back to the 1700’s and possibly older. There’s approximately 200 unmarked graves, and very few known documents on the history of the cemetery.
It was poorly tended for many years, overrun with garbage and lots of vandalism, but recently it’s been thoroughly cleaned up! Sadly, all the big, beautiful old trees have been cut down. The old wrought iron fencing has been removed as well. There’s always a trade off I guess, and I’m grateful to the people who invested the time and effort to clean it up.
I’ll never understand why people want to destroy things, especially cemeteries. Even after all the work that’s been invested in this cemetery someone has already knocked over one of the new signs.
I hope to eventually get photos of all the headstones. If you have relatives here, and would like a photo, just let me know. Next trip to Rockingham I’ll put you at the top of the list.
